What Is Compound Interest?

With compound interest, earned interest is added back to the principal each period. This snowball effect means that even small regular contributions can grow significantly over time.

Formula

Monthly rate = Annual rate ÷ 12
Monthly PMT = FV × r ÷ ((1+r)^n − 1)

r = monthly rate, n = months

FAQ

What if I enter 0% interest?
With 0% interest the tool uses simple division: Monthly = Goal ÷ Months. Total equals deposited amount since no interest is earned.
Which interest rate should I use?
Enter the annual gross rate. Keep in mind that taxes and fees will reduce your net return. Using the net annual yield of your savings account gives the most realistic result.
Can I adjust for inflation?
To account for inflation, use the real interest rate: Real rate = ((1 + nominal) ÷ (1 + inflation)) − 1. For example, 6% nominal and 3% inflation gives a real rate of about 2.9%.

Savings Goal Calculator

Our free savings goal calculator uses the future value of an annuity formula to find the monthly savings needed to reach any financial target, or to project the future value of regular contributions. Enter your goal, timeframe, and annual interest rate for an instant result.

Formula Used

Monthly PMT = FV × r ÷ [(1+r)^n − 1]
Where r = monthly rate (annual rate ÷ 12) and n = total months. When r = 0: PMT = FV ÷ n.

The Power of Compound Interest

Compound interest reinvests earned interest each period, accelerating growth over time. Starting early amplifies this effect significantly.
