N = ⌈ A × (1 + f/100) / (w × h) ⌉

N = ceiling( A × (1 + waste/100) / (w × h) ). Always add 10% waste for cuts and breakage.

FAQ

Why add a waste factor?
Tiles are cut at edges and corners; some may break during installation. A 10% waste factor is standard for straight laying. Use 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns.
How do I measure room area?
Multiply length by width (in metres). For L-shaped rooms, split into two rectangles and add the areas. Subtract large fixed obstacles like kitchen islands.
What tile size is best for small rooms?
Large tiles (60×60 cm or bigger) make small rooms feel more open because there are fewer grout lines. However they require a very flat surface and produce more waste in small spaces.

How Many Tiles Do I Need?

Tiling projects require careful material planning. Buying too few tiles means a costly return trip; buying too many wastes money. This calculator uses the formula N = ⌈ A × (1 + f/100) / (w × h) ⌉ to give you the exact ceiling count including a configurable waste factor.

Choosing the Right Waste Factor

Standard straight laying: 10%. Diagonal or herringbone: 15%. Intricate mosaic work: 20%. When in doubt, add an extra 5% — leftover tiles are useful for future repairs.
