What Is Compound Interest?

With compound interest, earned interest is added back to the principal each period. This snowball effect means that even small regular contributions can grow significantly over time.

Formula

Monthly rate = Annual rate ÷ 12
Monthly PMT = FV × r ÷ ((1+r)^n − 1)

r = monthly rate, n = months

Veelgestelde vragen

What if I enter 0% interest?
With 0% interest the tool uses simple division: Monthly = Goal / Months. Total equals deposited amount since no interest is earned.
Which interest rate should I use?
Enter the annual gross rate. Taxes and fees will reduce your net return. Using the net annual yield of your savings account gives the most realistic result.
Can I adjust for inflation?
To account for inflation, use the real rate: Real rate = ((1 + nominal) / (1 + inflation)) - 1. For example, 6% nominal and 3% inflation gives a real rate of about 2.9%.

Savings Goal Calculator

Our free savings goal calculator uses the future value of annuity formula to calculate the monthly savings needed to reach a financial target, or to project the future value of regular contributions.

Formula

Monthly PMT = FV x r / [(1+r)^n - 1]
r = monthly rate (annual / 12), n = total months. When r = 0: PMT = FV / n.

Compound Interest

Compound interest reinvests earnings each period, accelerating growth. Starting early amplifies this effect significantly.
